This new home will be nestled at the end of a quiet street in Takoma
Park, Maryland. The lot is surrounded by great Tulip Poplars and
historic bungalows.
The design and detail is based on the traditional bungalow, with
two full stories and an attic loft for the kids, a screened porch,
deck with outdoor shower, and a sunroom. Because of new setbacks,
the original house will have to be completely deconstructed. The
existing stone chimney will remain and salvaged slate, pine panelling,
brick, hardware and fixtures will be used in the new construction.
Green features include:
• Salvaging/recycling of existing structure
• Orientation of “winter” and “summer”
spaces and thermal mass to take advantage passive heating and cooling
strategies
• AAC (Aerated Autoclaved Concrete) construction for walls
• High efficiency equipment for radiant heat and minimal air
conditioning
• Rainwater harvesting and native landscaping
• Materials include sustainably harvested wood cabinets, salvaged
wood flooring, cork, recycled content countertops and tile, natural
plaster, and non-toxic paints, adhesives and insulation
